Isabella Tiger Moth or Banded Woolybear
Pyrrharctia isabella

Observation date: September 30, 2014
Submitted by: PianoKitten
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found this on the ground in a shady, damper area of the backyard, after moving a bulky item. I don't know if the caterpillar was underneath or just walking on the fallen leaves. The surrounding trees are mostly red maples, there are also oak, pine, apple and a number of other trees nearby to where I found this guy crawling. He may have actually been closest to the apple tree. I put him on a red maple before I took these pictures, that's why you'll see a few maple leaves in the pictures. He is maybe 2 inches long, but would stretch out longer, and quite dense with hair - mostly black with a thick band of a reddish/rust/brownish color band in the middle to rear section of his body.
