Coordinator notes: Your ID is correct Lynn...normally the Buckeye is not commonly seen though in some years they are frequent but always somewhat of a surprise even then. This female is probably the offspring of an earlier summer migrant this late in the year. Very dark colored buckeyes are recorded also in eastern-southeastern Colorado (though rarer). They are hybrids between the common buckeye and tropical buckeyes as they migrate north also and two or three other species occur in the south (they all look similar in gross characters). We also have a second buckeye species in western and southern Colorado from time to time as well (Junonia grisea - I call the Southwestern Buckeye)...it is darker than the Common and gets mistaken for the Mexican species nigrosuffusa that is nearly black above and has white antenna...hybrids with it have regular colored antennae with different colored clubs.
