Common Buckeye
Junonia coenia

Observation date: August 13, 2017
Submitted by: WINGSaloftinKS
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Took awhile to get this buckeye to quit flying away from me when I approached it, but once it settled onto this white clover, it just rotated around on it and let me get very close to it while it nectared on the flower. Hindwings a little tattered, AND I noticed something important: There was something wrong with its right eye—it wasn't as large as its other eye, and it was flesh-colored and not gold like the other one, perhaps blind or wounded? Size: Approx. 2" wingspan. Weather: Approx. 90 degrees and VERY HUMID.
