Ruby Tiger Moth
Phragmatobia fuliginosa (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Erebidae
Subfamily: Arctiinae
Identification: Body hairy. Head and thorax dark reddish brown. Abdomen red with rows of black spots. Wings translucent. Forewing dull reddish brown with no lines, only a black reniform spot. Hindwing pale pink with black discal spot; uneven black shading along costal and outer margins.
Wing Span: 2.8-3.4cm.
Life History:
Flight:
Caterpillar Hosts: Dock, Eupatorium species, goldenrod, ironweed, plantain, skunk cabbage, sunflowers, sweetgale, and other plants.
Adult Food:
Habitat:
Range: A holarctic species. North American subspecies is A. fuliginosa rubricosa.
Conservation:
NCGR: G5 - Demonstrably secure globally, though it may be quite rare in parts of its range, especially at the periphery.
Management Needs: None noted.
