Subfamily: Erebinae
Identification: Forewing mottled light gray with broad, diffuse black basal dash. Black lines and other dashes may also be heavy. Shade of bright red on hindwing is distinctive; fringe white, with some red toward apex in some specimens.
Wing Span: 5.7-7 cm.
Life History:
Flight: June-September.
Caterpillar Hosts: Scrub oak and other oaks.
Adult Food:
NCGR: G5 - Demonstrably secure globally, though it may be quite rare in parts of its range, especially at the periphery.
