Volupial Pyrausta Moth
Pyrausta volupialis

Observation date: June 25, 2014
Submitted by: krippens
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Pretty little moth was resting on vinca in my garden at dusk. Flew away when I got too close. Weather was partly cloudy ahead of a cold front passing through from the west, and a chance of rain.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Your id is close, but this a slightly different species: P. volupialis; good work nonetheless. Notice the bold and relatively straight PM line (postmedial line), on P. volupialis, in comparision to the broken, and more zig-zagged PM line on P. signatalis. (on this moth the PM line is the long straight white line near the edge of the wing, not the shorter zig-zagged line near the head)
Checklist region(s): United States, California, Marin County
