Observation notes: We've been here in Rensselaer County for 25 years, and never encountered this type of cocoon. We have four of these cocoons attached to 4 lilac bushes, adjacent to 250 raspberry canes and wild blueberry bushes. Our general area is swampy. About 25 & 8 years ago, we created two small ponds from two swamp areas (but very large swamps remain). Plenty of amphibians and fish populate the ponds.
Ten years ago, we introduced male & female bat houses at the pond edges, with a moderate improvement of mosquito control.
Two years ago, we introduced praying mantis to help control our mosquito, fly and japanese beetle populations.
This ~7 x 2 cm sized cocoon is a new organism for our area. Any thoughts?
