Observation notes: Smallest instar was gregarious in loose silken structures on terminal leaves on willow (volunteer, prob black willow hybrid). Many of these youngest caterpillars ended up dead under the tree; later instars have 1-3 cats per structure. Tree has around a dozen structures that I can count. It is my only willow tree; otherwise my yard is mixed deciduous woods, mostly oaks and maples, relatively dry.
