Tearful Underwing
Catocala lacrymosa

Observation date: August 28, 2013
Submitted by: wildreturn
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It was 94 degrees. This moth was low near the base of a tree in a small grove of large trees providing shade. There was a Widow Underwing nearby as well as a possible Youthful Underwing - as well as Red-banded Hairstreaks and other butterflies. This is a park setting, so the grass if mowed under the trees, but much litter is left about.
Status: Resident

Verified date: October 07, 2013
Coordinator notes: This is a variable species and the whitish crescents along the forewing inner margin at the base of the antemedial and postmedial lines do not appear to be developed on this specimen. Here is a photo on bugguide.net that looks much like the sighting photo. http://bugguide.net/node/view/394573
