Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio appalachiensis

Observation date: May 19, 2009
Submitted by: ms722
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I was reviewing the new tnleps.org county level maps and found that no Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail record existed for Sevier county (GSMNP). I remember photographing a "puddle party" while on vacation in 2009, so I thought I would submit my sightings. I tried to crop out one of the individuals in the first photograph and submitted the entire party in the second one. Most, if not all of the individuals appear to be Appalachian Tigers...noting the large size in relation to the Pipevine swallowtail in the second photo, the straight black wing edge, the broad blue submarginal band, and the connected yellow submarginal band. I uploaded a new photo from above - the straight black line formed by the forewing and hindwing is evident here.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Based on hindwing spots, angular verses crescent shape, I see both P. appalachiensis and P. glaucus.
Checklist region(s): United States, Tennessee, Sevier County
