Observation notes: The caterpillar was crawling across the sidewalk, most of its body inside of the strange pod in the photo. If it gets spooked by sudden movement, it will shrink into the pod and close the opening. We can't get it to come all the way out and we don't want to hurt it by opening the pod forcefully.
