Observation notes: This photo was taken just outside of the City of Guelph, Ontario Canada. This caterpiller was on a post which holds a gate. The area around was tall grasses and weeds and vines outside of the riding arena in a shaded area. There were two of the same species, one on each post for the gate to the arena. it is a most beautiful caterpillar. It was interesting to see two of the same kind when I had never seen this particular species before. It was a hot sunny day but this caterpillar was in the shade of the vines. I wish I knew the names of the surrounding vegetation but it is mostly grasses and weeds. Some of that "grape vine" as well. It was between 7 and 7:30 pm that we spotted them.
