Coordinator notes: Though this rosy maple moth may have appeared to be eating your sunflower, moths belonging to the subfamily Ceratocampinae (like this Dryocampa rubicunda) have vestigial mouth parts and cannot feed as adults. The adult lives for just a week or so to mate and lay eggs. The larvae of this species feed on various maples, especially red maple in Rhode Island.
