'Northern' Southern Hairstreak
Satyrium favonius ontario

Observation date: June 01, 2013
Date notes: Late morning
Submitted by: gunhilda
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I'm not positive this is the same individual, but among the group of hairstreaks, these were darker/muddier (browner as opposed to grey) and just slightly smaller. I don't know if there is sexual dimorphism in Oak Hairstreaks, if so, that might account for the differences I was seeing. But there is orange on top of the blue hindwing spot, so I'm not sure what else they could be. They were feeding on privet on a calm, sunny day after a week of high winds, high humidity, epic rains, hail, and stormy weather.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: I think this is just a slight color variation on the species. The markings are the same as the other related sightings of this species. Again, note the small orange "cap" on the underside hindwing blue blotch.
