Nais Tiger Moth
Apantesis nais

Observation date: May 27, 2013
Submitted by: HClenin
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: A quick question - If it is a "Apantesis carlotta", why doesn't this species have a common name?
Status: Resident
Verified by: Phillip E. Koenig
Verified date: May 30, 2013
Coordinator notes: Unfortunately, the HW and abdomen are not visible. I am calling this Apantesis nais because the collar does not appear to have a black dot on each side as the other A. species in Missouri. There are many insects that have scientific names but no common name. Common names very from one language or location to another and are useless to the scientist. If you want to call A. carlotta “Carlotta’s tiger moth” or something else, it is okay with me.
