Streaked sphinx
Protambulyx strigilis

Observation date: February 08, 2013
Submitted by: brashj
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This streaked sphinx was sitting on a live oak tree trunk, about 4 feet off the ground. It was completely unafraid of me. I used a small pine needle or narrow stick to gently coax its front legs up onto my finger, and it walked right up my finger. Once on my finger, it sat happily while I took it indoors to identify and photograph it. Then I took it back outside and used the same technique to coax it off my finger and back onto the tree. Since it wasn't interested in flying away, I got the impression that maybe it had just come out of its cacoon and was perhaps drying its wings, although I didn't see a cacoon anywhere. The underside of this moth is an interesting shade of orange, and it has large, intelligent eyes.
