Observation notes: Appears there was a recent hatch of these moths(?). Have seen many over the last ~3 weeks, in wooded lot of white and red oak, maple, yellow poplar, pine. We are in the piedmont region of central Virginia. Interesting behavior: they seem to like the smoke from our fire (clearing brush during the day). They fly over and up through the smoke! This guy recovered from being trapped under the bowl in the picture - he flew away unharmed right after I took this picture.
