Southern Armyworm Moth
Spodoptera eridania

Observation date: September 09, 2012
Submitted by: Anna_holmes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The caterpillars are just over an inch long at this point. They have changed in color over the last couple of days to darker and more vibrant from almost translucent a couple of days ago. They are feeding on Milkweed leaves, and it doesn't seem to be toxic to them although I could not find any literature that states they use this as a host plant. The only other visual larva on the Milkweed is an as yet unidentified looper larva.
