Imperial moth
Eacles imperialis

Observation date: September 02, 2012
Submitted by: Jan Hoek
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: We found this caterpillar under a holly tree, but it was on the ground, not on one of the leaves, so not sure if this is a food plant. (There are many other plants nearby, including a milkweed plant growing underneath the holly tree and the location is in the middle of soybean fields). Very large caterpillar, maybe about 3 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter. Dark red color, with what appear to be yellow mouth parts and a row of white spots on each side, one on each segment (except the first and last segments), and two rows of yellowish-orange "bumps" on each segment, along its entire length. There also seem to be some appendages on the terminal segments. Body covered with short white hairs, not in clumps.
