Squash Vine Borer
Melittia cucurbitae

Observation date: August 03, 2012

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The afternoon these photos were taken, it was sunny, hot, and humid. This beautiful moth was all over my Kaleidoscope Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii ‘Bicolor’), and appeared to be "following" a Cabbage White Butterfly. I saw the Moth fly in near the Cabbage White, and from that point on it visited every bloom the CW was on, invariably causing the CW to change blooms until it finally just flew away. This may have been coincidence, but it was fun to watch; like a game of tag in which the same person is always "it." (On another note, this is the first time I have ever seen a Squash Vine Borer Moth, so hopefully my identification is correct.)
