Yellow-Banded Wasp Moth
Syntomeida ipomoeae

Observation date: May 12, 2012
Submitted by: DUNNELLON GATOR...
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This possible moth looks similar to the Riley's Clearwing in body color but the wings are not clear. The host plant is the Pink Moon Flower Vine in my yard in Dunnellon, FL The larva tend to have a defense mechanism that allows them to drop like bungie jumpers from a trail of web if disturbed. I tried feeding the larva to my fish in the pond and they won't eat them. That leads me to believe they may have toxins in their bodies. The younger larva are darker orange with black longer fur. I have photos of that stage as well.
