Observation notes: What is this mothzilla? I've never seen one like it. It has spent the day on our front door.

Coordinator notes: The "modest sphinx" used to be widely known as the "big poplar sphinx" and might be found in books and other references under that name. It is a relatively common moth in much of Michigan, yet it is not seen that often. The caterpillars are very similar to the hornworms found on tomatoes, but they feed on poplar, aspen and closely related trees.
