Arachne Checkerspot
Poladryas arachne

Observation date: June 01, 2012
Submitted by: Christian.Nunes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: A single Arachne Checkerspot was observed hill-topping on the summit of the ridge west of South Boulder Peak. A small checkerspot (smaller than adjacent Variable, about the same size of nearby Gorgone), that was distinctly orange with black veins. The underside was a stunning orange and white pattern. It spent most of the time chasing other butterflies, but was also observed nectaring on Whiskbroom Parsley (Harbouria trachypleura).
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: The Beard-tongue Checkerspot, a male correctly identified by the submitter. The common name noted fits because only host is Beard-tongue or Penstemon but the "Arachne Checkerspot" has been used most often.
Checklist region(s): United States, Colorado, Boulder County
