Columbia silkmoth
Hyalophora columbia

Observation date: May 22, 2012
Submitted by: Noel Mac Neil
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Caught at a black light.
Status: Resident
Verified by: elsner
Verified date: May 31, 2012
Coordinator notes: A close relative of the cecropia moth. The columbia silk moth feed on tamarack as a caterpillar and is not a common find in most of Michigan. I'd love to hear if you see any more of these, especially if a female turns up. I live in Traverse City, and if I could get a live female I would attempt to get eggs and rear a brood of larvae.
