Observation notes: I have not ever seen a Milbert's Tortoiseshell in my yard before, so this was quite a treat! We've had a very mild winter. Between my initial sighting on April 2nd and my photofest on April 8th, we had a spring snow storm. I have lots of leaves in the flower beds, as well as the rock retaining wall, so I was hopeful that Milbert would find a place to take shelter from the several inches of snow that fell... and he did! I have two different types of crocus blooming in the yard, so I figure that's what attracted Milbert to my yard. Milbert was very tolerant of the bee who wanted to share the same crocus with him :-) Between feeding, he stayed stationary for quite a while, holding his wings up against each other, and seemed almost "tame". Hope that is enough information for you!
