Observation notes: This is a second instar larva reared from ovum obtained from adult pictured in sighting #701067. Adult was captured E of Horseshoe Bend, ID and larvae were reared in Boise, ID. Accepted food upon hatching from ova was Plantago sp. and Taraxicum sp., but as larvae matured they stopped feeding on Taraxicum and switched exclusively to Plantago. Larvae reached 4th or 5th instar, at which time they stopped eating and became inactive. I assume that in the wild, at this time, larvae would diapause, overwinter as mature or nearly mature larvae and pupate for a short time in the spring (adults are generally active Apr-June). Larvae I were rearing indoors were killed by fungus, when they became inactive, probably due to too much moisture in the rearing container.
