Johnson's Hairstreak
Callophrys johnsoni

Observation date: May 21, 2000
Submitted by: pcastrovillo
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This was the first individual I encountered in the Horseshoe Bend, ID area (I believe an eastern extension of the recorded range of C. johnsoni). Specimen was collected along a sandy trail near a creek. Elev approx 3500 ft. Transition habitat between sage steppe/forest/riparian. More individuals were subsequently seen in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2010 - all along the same half mile stretch of road. I have only seen 1-3 specimens per year, but my time spent at Horseshoe Bend each year is only 1-6 days throughout the entire butterfly season. This specimen resides in the Orma J. Smith Museum of Natural History at The College of Idaho, Caldwell, ID.
