Coordinator notes: Coordinator 1: middle leg tibial spine rules out E. vestris. Cannot see other ID characters to identify. Coordinator 2: This is a female of one of the "three black witches", which are hard to differentiate. Opler/Malikul list two similar species to Dun Skipper which could occur in the area of the sighting, and photos of each show middle-leg tibial spines--1) Little Glassywing, and 2) Northern Broken-dash. A review of photos of female Little Glassywing show that the translucent spot on the forewing always shows through. Additionally, photos show the antenna tips to consistently be blackish to black-bluish. Neither of these characteristics show in the sighting photo and this species documented range typically goes no farther than central Wisconsin, not as far north as the sighting locale. A review of photos of female Northern Broken-dash shows that the white spotting can be very faint, almost nonexistent in some. Additionally, the antenna tips tend to have an orange cast to one side of them. The sighting photo shows no spots and the antenna tips do have an orange cast on one side. These characteristics, plus the middle-leg tibial spines noted by Coordinator 1, plus the sighting locale lead me to believe this sighting photo is of a female Northern Broken-dash.
