Yellow-necked Caterpillar Moth
Datana ministra

Observation date: August 23, 2011
Submitted by: nyenser
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: These caterpillars are devouring our pin oak tree leaves. They have the lower branches totally leaf free. We do not remember having this problem last year. "Pest service" says they come out only every so many years (?) They come out of the tree and burrow along the sidewalk edge.
Status: Resident
Verified by: Don Tangren
Verified date: January 22, 2013
Coordinator notes: This moth is out every year. Usually they are rather inconspicuous. Maybe a lack of predators or an over abundance of other food sources caused this unusual occurance.
Checklist region(s): United States, Tennessee, Shelby County
