Evergreen Bagworm Moth
Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis

Observation date: July 16, 2011
Date notes: I found what I thought was some debris, pine needles, a leaf, all stuck together hanging off my young weeping willow. I pulled it off and dropped it on the ground. The next day I saw it WALKING. Curious, I brought it inside and put it in a small terrarium and it walked to the top on a stick and then attached itself to the top area. It is a cocoon and I only saw the head and a couple pairs of feet when it was walking. Do you know what comes out of this kind of cocoon? Found the week of July 11-15th, 2011.

Observation notes: I've never seen one of these before but I've only lived in this area about 2 years. I watched this walk before it attached itself to the top of my little terrarium. I look at it several times a day. I want to make sure it is not harmed and allowed to fly away when it comes out of the cocoon.
