Observation notes: Discovered this moth mixed in with some brown leaves that I was cleaning out of my garden in the backyard. I almost didn't see it, but am grateful that I did. Such an amazingly beautiful moth! I knew immediately that the moth was definitely in the wrong place. I've lived in Kansas my whole life, and have never seen anything like it. Its wing span was around 5" or more. I wasn't sure if it was still alive, it was very still at first, and allowed me to get very close to take the photographs. It stayed in my garden all night and all the next morning, barely moving at all, but eventually I did see it fly away that afternoon.
