Observation notes: Sunny clear day; lots of butterflies out but only saw one of these. The other butterflies were clearly California tortoisshells or non-checkerspots. Seen on the Maggies Peak trail near South Lake Tahoe, elevation approximately 8,000 ft.

Coordinator notes: What looks like an Edith's Checkerspot but isn't? Euphydryas chalcedona sierra. The spots on the abdomen provide its true identity, but don't be disappointed, I consider those a real prize....Ken Davenport
