Polyphemus moth
Antheraea polyphemus

Observation date: June 29, 2026
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Fresh out of its cocoon. It's wings were still quite soft...floppy like thin deerskin. Don't know if we've seen one of these here yet. I believe it was perched on Mountain Mahogany.

Coordinator notes: Without seeing the upper side of this magnificent moth, it's not easy to tell if this is A. oculea (Western Polyphemus Moth) or A. polyphemus (Polyphemus Moth). The range maps in MPG and BAMONA help a little, but they're not definitive. The ranges of the two species definitely overlap in the BAMONA maps, but much less so in MPG. Still, based on what I can see, I think this is A. polyphemus. I trust that other coordinators will weigh in on this if I'm wrong. A topside view would have been definitive, but that's difficult to get when the moth has first eclosed. JRains
