Observation notes: Caterpillars feeding on Ceanothus velutinus. Earlier in the day I photographed California Tortoiseshell butterflies on this same plant, I did notice the caterpillars until I checked back later in the day. ISite is Marys Peak, Oregon, Benton County, Conner's Camp trailhead and parking lot. Dry meadow surrounded by open, mixed deciduous and conifer forest with native understory. I am wondering if I have more than one instar in the photos. Notice insect in lower right side of second photo.
