Observation notes: I'm assuming... since I've only ever since Anicia in this location, and not Edith's (I remember you said in the past that Edith's comes out earlier in the year -- and I've scoped this location out throughout May, hoping to see Edith's, and this is the first checkerspot I've seen thus far in 2026). However, this one has a lot more orange (especially on the lower wings) than probably 90% of the ones I've seen in this location.

Coordinator notes: This is a male Edith's Checkerspot (subspecies albarki)...it is usually smaller than the Anicia (aka Variable) Checkerspot and flies a little before...this one is somewhat worn. It would be too hard to describe the main difference between the two as the feature on the underside of the hindwings is not clearly discernible in your photo...if you have a Kauffman guide or Opler's Western Butterflies book, they should explain it...for the time being...until I get the Colorado book Vol. 1 finished soon...editha is in the first volume.
