Juniper Hairstreak
Callophrys gryneus

Observation date: April 18, 2026
Submitted by: glennfine
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I see many Callophrys nelsoni in south-central Siskiyou Co., but this is the first Callophrys gryneus I have seen. Nectating on buckwheat growing in a sandy, volcanic area with mature junipers just to the north of Mount Shasta. 2nd photo is habitat. Similar to Columbia Basin segregate at BofA?
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: This would be in the siva group and many put nelsoni in gryneus as a subspecies. My personal preference is to treat nelsoni and siva as separate species because they act that way in the southern Sierra, but it may be different northward-Ken Davenort
Checklist region(s): United States, California, Siskiyou County
