Observation notes: I am still learning about the differences between Papilio glaucus and Papilio appalachiensis. Appreciate any guidance.

Coordinator notes: It is actually quite difficult to distinguish P. glaucus and appalachiensis, especially from photographs unless they are particularly revealing. I find it most challenging with the melanistic females (common in both species, depending on geography). I agree with the description on the BAMONA sp. page about the elusive nature of the females, but of course they are seen. I think I see a reduced area of blue iridescent wash on the topside of the HW, which suggests appalachiensis, and the black bands seem narrower to me than in P. glaucus, which also points to appalachiensis. My general sense is that this is in fact P. appalachiensis, but I hope that other coordinators will correct me if they think I have this wrong. JRains
