Observation notes: While out for a walk on a trail in Caledonia state park in PA, we noticed the butterfly flying about and then resting a bit in the leaves. seemed early for butterflys

Coordinator notes: Adults of the Anglewing family, particularly our local Commas and the Mourning Cloak, overwinter as adults and hide in bark or leafy debris. It isn’t uncommon to see them venturing out on warmer late winter or early spring days to sip some nutrients from the moisture on the ground, then retreat back on cooler days/nights until the more continuous warmer weather sets in. -jmgesell
