Coordinator notes: Thanks for contributing! This is a female Juvenal's Duskywing, a common early season species here in the Georgia piedmont. The Wild Indigo Duskywing is similar but has a more uniformly darkened and less contrasty basal area on the forewings, smaller white forewing spots (female Juvenal's and Horace's tend to have the largest forewing spots of any eastern Duskywings), a more compact/petite appearance with stubbier wings, less triangular/pointed spots below the pale forearm patch, usually less prominent pale spots on the hindwings, less well-aligned subapical spots, more slender antennal clubs, and more prominently white-ringed antennae. It is also much rarer in the southeast (unlikely to be found in residential subdivisions) and usually found later in the season. Overall, the very boldly marked, highly contrasting appearance with dense silvery scaling on the forewings and early date are good things to look out for on a female Juvenal's.
