Coordinator notes: I believe what you have here is a Euphydryas colon colon or wallacensis checkerspot based on what Robert Michael Pyle and Caitlin LeBar wrote in their Butterflies of Cascadia book. My own series of E. colon wallacensis was taken north of Crater Lake along the Umpqua River and a possible one from near Mt. Ashland along Old Hwy. 99 which has also been called a chalcedona. But my collected material from the McCloud-Bartle region showed E. colon sperryi and E. chalcedona dwinellei are the same thing genomically...a chalcedona and not a colon. Personally, I accept chalcedona, anicia and colon are separate species and very variable. I will not repeat this as I process your other submissions....Ken Davenport
