Cabbage White
Pieris rapae

Observation date: January 31, 2026
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found sheltering in a wood pile. Low overnight temps for the preceding week ranged between about 20F and -10F and daytime highs ranged from about 19F and 51F (recorded in Capulin, NM). A tarp covers the woodpile, so temperatures would have been a bit warmer--perhaps protecting it from the coldest freezes. The individual was weak in the morning. After warming up indoors for a few hours, it flew away without any trouble.

Coordinator notes: I guess no need to be in Las Cruces to see butterflies in January! thanks, Kelly!
