Orange Sulphur
Colias eurytheme

Observation date: January 24, 2026
Submitted by: Lisahug
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I am calling this Orange Sulphur on range and context, but I can't see a hint of orange in it. There were about 6 other Sulphurs around that weren't landing, and when I looked at them with binoculars I could see orange in them in flight. Is the wing just not open enough to see it? Individual variation? or a vagrant Clouded Sulphur? How can one tell?

Coordinator notes: You can't without an actual specimen is such a pose, but you are too far north for Colias harfordii and Colias eriphyle (or philodice to some) because those don't live in Sonoma County and neither does Colia alexandra, and its way too early and probably too far south for CVolias occidentalis. I have taken Colias harfordii in January but in Santa Barbara County!-Ken Davenport
