Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: November 28, 2025
Submitted by: LightScavenger
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I think this is a painted lady but a few things are throwing me off. One is the pale orange spot on the upper wings where there's usually a white spot. Another is the vivid blue at the bottom of the wings. And in general, this butterfly is more colorful than most painted ladies. But I think its wing shape is more like a painted lady than an american lady (and I know it's not a west coast lady, although some were present on the same chamisa bush at the same time). No shot of its ventral wings unfortunately. At the time, I was quite sure it was a painted lady.
