Observation notes: We found several tubes created by the Pine Tube Moth larva with one tube still in use. We were in Cades Cove inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was a warm, sunny day about 70 degrees. We were in a woods where there were many young white pines about 10 years old. We found at least 5 tubes that caught our attention and one that was still active in that the tips of the pine needles that formed the tube were not eaten. This larva will go through winter in a tube and temperatures are dropping today, the next day after this observation, down into the 30s.
