Observation notes: Saw in my car on arrival home from Plainfield,CT. Not sure if he hitched a ride from there or had entered at my house and did a round trip. I do have Heart Nut trees on my property and my Seek app identified some trees as type of walnuts.

Coordinator notes: Hi Meryl. This could certainly be C. residua, but it could also be several other underwing moths that occur in Connecticut, like C. vidua, C. robinsonii, C. lacrymosa, etc. I'm not able to be sure from this photo. I can see how Seek would think it's C. residua based on what I can see of the forewing pattern, but that might also be the lighting. I'll identify this one to the genus level.
