Observation notes: This is a terrible photo of a Catocala, but I submit it because it's the only one I've seen this year. In Connecticut the Catocala have just one brood, with imagos active in very late summer and sometimes early fall. Some years I see a good many of them; this year I've only seen this one. I couldn't get close enough to identify it (it was sitting about 10 feet up on the side of my house; curiously, in the sun). But I think it's probably C. vidua.
