Ruddy Dagger Moth

Observation notes: Drought conditions, dry, warm, clear day. Found on a screen near heavily wooded area. Nearby plants identified were common privet, unknown elm, shagbark hickory, black walnut, beefsteak plant, unknown oak, coneflower, jewelweed, rose of Sharon, and unknown apple tree, among numerous other unidentified plants. Caterpillar was not heavily active upon initial sighting, but began to crawl away towards the top of the screen after about 10 minutes of observation. Eventually ended up traveling approximately 3’-4’ total from initial observation to top of treated/stained wood porch frame. Other insects noted nearby (within 1’-2’ of sighting) include unknown wasp species nest with numerous live wasps, an eastern harvestman, and a single pale tiger moth caterpillar.
