Coordinator notes: This is a newly emerged male Zephry Comma...aka Hoary Comma (Polygonia gracilis zephyrus)...the hibernating brood. The Green Comma is easy to identify...from above, the spots along the edge of the hindwing are small and distinct and they are entirely within a dark border. The underside of the hindwings on male Green Commas has a very mottled pattern (grayish-grayish-brown) and the females in Colorado often have a fairly uniform gray to grayish-brown surface with little or a reduced pattern like the males (one with a strong mottled pattern like the males is uncommonly observed most of the time but can vary year to year and location to location). Hope that helps you ID one...this is also the time of the year for it as well as the Hoary (and also the Dark Comma...Polygonia oreas) which is less common than either. Mike
