Aphrodite Fritillary
Speyeria aphrodite

Observation date: September 01, 2025
Submitted by: chneal
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I woud have suggested this is a Mormon Fritillary before I read Steve Cary's notes in Butterflies of NM hosted by PEEC. i submitted a photo of a similar one in 2021 and it was accepted as a Mormon Fritillary. Did I understand the notes and get this one identified correctly? I never was able even to glimpse its ventral side, let alone get a photo. This rather worn and ragged speciman was in a patch of sunflowers near the amphitheater at Camp May on Pajarito Mtn in Los Alamos County, NM
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Fritillaries are difficult, so I look at the eyes first. This one has amber eyes, which (in your area) narrows it down to Aphrodite and Great Spangled. You were high enough to get Mormon, but this late in the season many things have wandered beyond their normal range.
Checklist region(s): United States, New Mexico, Los Alamos County
