Zerene Fritillary
Speyeria zerene

Observation date: August 21, 2025
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Elevation approx 10,000-10,500. The spotting just didn't strike me as Mormon, and I notice the blue eyes (though I realize it's not the only species with blue eyes)
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: We are suppose to flag these that can go either way as unable to identify but we'll take a flyer and consider it zerene...a female...it is not hesperis/nausicaa (electa) and doesn't look like mormonia from what is clear on the underside...including the hindwing disc color, and it is also looks like a larger fritillary. So we will see if anyone sends in an ID challenge on the zerene determination. Zerene is common in Grand County as also is mormonia. I am surprised you have not submitted any photos of zerene. It is common over on the Beaver Creek road up where you start to drive into the forest on the road. Mike
